49th State Brewing Anchorage
About this place
The building at 717 W 3rd Avenue has a past: in the 1930s it housed the Elks Lodge, and the brewpub that took it over kept enough of that old-Anchorage character to make the place feel anchored to the city. These days it is a destination for locals and cruise-ship visitors who want a beer that was brewed down the block and a menu that leans on Alaskan ingredients.
Food Built on Alaska
The kitchen works with freshly sourced Alaskan products. The Original Alaskan Yak Sausage is the item to try if you are visiting, since yak is not something most menus offer. A Bavarian handmade pretzel is the classic brewpub starter, and wood-fire pizzas fill out the middle of the menu.
It also runs a full liquor store on site, offering bottles, pre-mixed cocktails and beer to go in several sizes, which makes it useful for stocking up before a cabin trip.
The Rooftops
The real signature is outside. Two rooftop patios offer outdoor dining seven days a week, with dog-friendly seating and even a dog park. In summer, Anchorage's long daylight hours turn the rooftop into a dinner spot well past what other cities call sunset.
Hours are 11 AM to 11 PM Monday through Saturday and 11 AM to 10 PM on Sunday. The phone is (907) 277-7727.
